One of the reasons I love living in Charlotte is the weather. The winters are mild but snow is not too far away and the summers are nice and hot. When it gets to be real hot outside I’m always looking for places to cool off.
My favorite place to get in a little exercise and cool off at the same time is renting a kayak and going out on the lake. I love gliding on top of the calm water, and when it gets too hot, all you need to do is jump in the refreshing water.
Another great place to cool off is right in my very own backyard. My wife and I recently bought a house, and it’s got a great inground pool in the backyard. (Although if you ask my wife she’ll tell you that we bought a pool that came with a house.) There’s nothing like having some friends over, BBQing and taking a dip in the pool.
Brian Saemann, Director of Products & Marketing – Disc Golf
This summer I’ve discovered a new favorite Charlotte Summertime Activity – Disc Golf. My son Jake and I were just checking out the fields at Elon Park when we stumbled across a Disc Golf Course. One of the players was kind enough to give Jake a disc and we had an incredible time playing together.
Since that first round early this summer we’ve gotten some new discs and been out to a course nearly once a week. It turns out that Charlotte is a nationally recognized “Awesome City for Disc Golf.” There are 15 courses in the immediate area and people travel from all over the country to play them.
We’ve just started to check them all off our list so this new favorite summertime activity will keep us smiling into the fall as well. If you haven’t tried Disc Golf yet, I highly recommend it!
Trish Saemann, Director of Business Development – Water Park/Splash Pad
There is no shortage of pools, fountains and splash pads in the Charlotte area. My favorite summer activity is watching my little guys play in any body of water. Whether it is puddles in the street from a summer storm, the water park at our local YMCA, or the splash pad in Blakeney, we love to get wet! My kids seem to develop freckles by the dozen with every excursion. The unfettered joy they exude with each squeal and giggle is hands down my favorite thing to watch. When we want to get a quick change of scenery, we’ll abandon the Morrison Y for something outside our norm. The water parks at the Harris, Baxter Village and Siskey YMCA locations are great as well.
James Doerflinger, Creative Director – Dog Friendly Patio Chilling
The only thing better than summer is air conditioning, which is the environment most of my summer activities take place in. On a typical Sunday you can find me cruising with the wife, hunting for treasures at estate/yard sales while The Delfonics or Bikini Kill play in the background. Sunday driver style. When the weather is kind enough, dog friendly patios like Healthy Home Market and Pizza Peel are great for a pint and bite. Summer shout-out to Willis Carrier, inventor of the modern air conditioner.
Ali Phalen, Content & Social Media Manager – Hiking/Outdoor Concerts
Despite the extremely high temperatures, my favorite things to do during the summer involve being outside. The first is hiking – I know, I’m crazy. However, I have an 85lb puppy who needs to get outside for exercise, making hiking our best option. First off, I go for tree-covered trails that help block the sun and keep the ground cool under Derby’s (the pup’s) feet. I also choose trails that have some kind of water to help make sure he doesn’t become overheated. A couple of my favorites are McDowell Nature Preserve and the Anne Springs Greenway. You should definitely check them out!
My other favorite summer activity is going to outdoor concerts. Last summer, I had the privilege of going to a plethora of country concerts at PNC Music Pavilion with my Country Megaticket. You can always count on country concerts for great music, friends, beverages and people watching. This summer I’ve been lucky enough to expand my repertoire with some of my all-time favorites – including Mumford and Sons, Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones. Needless to say, I’ve made memories I’ll carry with me for a long time at summer concerts!
